POEM: Mama Tended Flowers

I laughed as Mama tended flowers
Bending over in red-flowered shorts.
Seed packets and hoe
Stringed pickets – straight row
Four daughters to show
How a proper garden should grow’
So we donned our most flowery shorts,
Sure ’twas the secret to beautiful flowers.

Now I’m tending Mama’s heirloom plants.
They’re indoors now and I’m wearing pants.
The weather is showering,
But the cactus is flowering,
Geraniums towering,
My feed-water empowering
Violets from yesteryear to overflow
As I teach my young daughter to grow.
